During the 1919 general strike by the railway workers in Punjab, a trade union was formed with three thousand members. The strike was intensified and forced the administration to bow down to the demands of the workers and gave them a wage-rise of 40-100%. This victory by railway workers inspired the workers of other sectors, who also started forming their organizations and during 1920-27, many industrial units and the port workers formed their organizations.
